It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since I packed my life into two suitcases and left for the Peace Corps in Lesotho, a tiny mountain kingdom in southern Africa.
For years, I wasn’t ready to write about the experience. I needed time and distance to understand how profoundly my fifteen months changed me. Looking back now, I can finally see not only what happened, but why it mattered.
As I work on my memoir, I’ve decided to share a series of stories called Stories From My Peace Corps Years. These aren’t just stories about living in a rural African village—they’re about starting over after divorce at fifty-eight, facing fears, embracing a completely different culture, and, ultimately, learning to become my own best friend.
I hope you’ll enjoy following along. If these stories resonate with you, I’d love for you to subscribe at soniamarsh.com and join me on the journey.

Sonia,
Sounds good. Have appreciated your past shares over the(se) years. On a related personal note, I decided to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in 2010 with Sierra Club members. Before leaving, I had to have 7 arm shots (plus 3 more upon returning)–to ward off any East African diseases. At that point, before leaving, I wrote my obituary (I stared at the blank paper for a half hour before penning such!).
So nice to get a comment from you. I remember all those shots as well, including a rabies shot for the Peace Corps. What were yours?
It was good to read about your Peace Corps start. Looking forward to the next chapter. We haven’t seen each other for several years but it’s great to hear what you’ve been doing in your other posts. Let me know if you’re in CA and have time for lunch.
Glad to hear from you. Yes, I’m in Orange County, California for the time being and have a few trips planned before the end of the year. Where are you located?
