A Busy Week: Graduation and Father’s Day.

We’ve had so many events this week. First an amazing Graduation Ceremony for our middle son who will soon be attending college at the end of July. Here’s a photo of Austin, 18, my husband Duke, and me.

I hope you shared a day filled with joy and family, on Father’s Day.
Our day started with a stop at our local bagel shop. Fresh toasted bagels with cream cheese, followed by a stop at Peet’s coffee for our delicious large coffee and the kids’ favorite caramel flavored, cream topped, beverages, then a ten mile drive to San Clemente beach. We drove down Del Mar street where Farmers Market street vendors displayed fresh fruits, and rows of flowers lined the sidewalk. The parking lot next to the beach was surprisingly vacant for a Sunday morning, but perhaps fathers like to sleep in, when it’s their special day.

We found a picnic table overlooking the Pacific, unpacked our bag of bagels and relaxed under an umbrella. Owners walked past us with their dogs while our own hyperactive rat terrier stayed home. We’d love to bring her with us, but she cannot behave like a civilized dog.

Our two sons, 18 and 15, swam in the freezing Pacific Ocean. At least it’s freezing to us, after the 80F waters of Belize.

We watched them body surf for an hour, tried to play Frisbee, but that piece of round plastic got lost in the ocean waves after three minutes of playing. Then we drove home.

After a short while, Duke and I decided to see the new Sandra Bullock movie, The Proposal. It was the perfect date movie. I really enjoy Sandra Bullock, although she does seem to always play the same roles. Betty White was also extremely entertaining.

Finally dinner with the family, consisted of a take-out BBQ, from Lucille’s BBQ.

What about you? Have you been busy with end of school year activities? And how was your Father’s Day?

    Wow! Sounds like you've had an extraordinary week. Congratulations to Austin on his academic success. Hope College is good.

    Sounds like you had a good day today, too.

    Father's Day. Call from my daughter across town. Briefly catching up on my mail. Worship at Church. Afternoon nap. Fixing house — mostly cleaning up — taking school-related stuff to our son, who is home-schooling his two children. Nothing terribly exciting, except that it rained almost all day, in a place that has been getting VERY dry.

    Tillykke! It looks like a wonderful weekend with your family!
    And alllllll that California sun! :o)

    *Father's Day in Sweden has been and gone already.

    However, we went up to our little wooden summer cottage in the countryside that we are renting and spent a whole day just relaxing with no musts/must-dos… Wonderful!

    Your day sounds fun too. And congrats on the graduating middle son.

    Sounds like a very California way to spend Father's Day! I wish we lived closer to the beach, but oh well…

    Since my kids are still in Germany going to school (and I really really miss them), my husband and I took my dad and mom out for Father's Day. It wasn't quite the same without the wee ones, but it was still nice. Amazing how the conversation becomes so much more "adult" when my two aren't around to throw in their bubbling ideas on swimming, summer, gymnastics and swimming, swimming swimming. I think this is what empty nesting on Father's Day will be like. Not bad. Just takes some serious getting used to.

    @Rob-bear
    So the rain felt like a relief to you I suppose, since you've had dry weather. Fixing house on Father's Day!

    @Kelli,
    Yes, I know. We're lucky with the sunshine and beaches so close by.

    @LadyFi
    Funny how Father's day is the same in France, but not Sweden. I always get confused about that.

    @Hit 40
    Yes, I just heard this movie was Sandra Blullock's biggest opening movie in history.

    @Jacki,
    I suppose it is a CA way to spend Father's Day, although most go to brunch in a restaurant.

    @Stacy,
    I remember you weren't too happy about them leaving for Germany. I thought it was only for 2 weeks though.

    Sounds like a great way to spend a fathers day. Its amazing how young people can handle the water no matter how cold it is!

    We did our fathers day a week ahead of time and had a low key Sunday.

    Fixing house on Father's Day.

    Isn't that what Bears (I mean men) are supposed to do?

    It was my wife's idea.

    Congratulations on your son graduating high school and beginning college. Such a big step! My daughter begins her Senior year in High School this fall and I have a feeling it will be *more* crazy than it was with her brother. I'm mentally prepping….

    @Brenda
    I remember swimming in the icy waters around Denmark as a child. Why can't I stand the cold pacific without a wet-suit today?

    @Rob-bear
    I think G-3, meant you to do that on Mother's Day. I wouldn't ask a bear to fix house on Father's Day.

    @ Pop and Ice
    I know what you mean about each kid being different. Thanks for all 3 of your comments. I like the one about the tattoos.

    @Lady Glamis
    I hope you had a nice Father's Day, with your daughter.

    @Gramma Ann
    You're right. I forgot June 21st is the first day of summer.

    Congrats to you and your son on another graduation. And a date night with your husband is great too. You have invested in your family and you will never be sorry you did.

    Congrats to you on your son's graduation! How exciting…that seems light years away for me but I know it is right around the corner.

    Me? My big kids (10 and 7) are out for the summer and I'm trying to reorganize so I don't lose myself in their activities. My bambina is 14 months and so her life is my life. Hmmm…we'll see if I can get it together before the summer swallows us up! Looks like I'll be doing all my writing on the beach…yay me!

    Sounds like a great time. Congrats to your son on his graduation!

    I asked my hubby what he wanted to do for Father's Day – his only answer – "sleep in"!!!

    Congrats to Austin. A great day, for sure. Our second graduated a few weeks ago, and the third and final graduates next year. Then we'll have three in college at the same time. I hope my checkbook can handle it.
